His story
Born in Roman Britain to a Christian family, Patrick was captured by Irish raiders at about 16 and spent six years herding animals in Ireland, where he turned to prayer. He escaped and went home, then came back as a bishop to evangelise the Irish. His own Confessio survives, one of the earliest documents of Irish history.
